In this article, we are going to look into a common question that often gets asked. What to wear in an infrared sauna? This might sound like an obvious question, maybe it’s not. Depending on where you are can depend on what you wear.
This can be looked at in two different ways. Are you using a public infrared sauna or your own infrared sauna that is in the comfort of your own home out of the eyes of others?
The unwritten rule is as follows. Wear as little as you can, and within reason depending on where you are.
Doing this will allow you to have a better experience in your sauna which will lead to better results.
You can, of course, wear clothes in an infrared sauna or a sauna in general, just make sure they are not too tight and your body can breathe while you’re wearing them. The lighter your clothes are the better it is, why? Tight clothes can block your sweat pores, and we don’t want to do that.
Probably the best clothes to wear would be something like a loose cotton shirt as well as shorts, or you could go for a sauna suit or a towel.
Some other clothes you could wear would include breathable swimwear, yoga clothing or even a light towel. Any of this sort of loose clothing would be ok for an infrared sauna.

Now this will be a little different because you don’t have to be in the public eye, you have your own infrared sauna all for yourself, which can be a real winner as you don’t have to worry about all the etiquette involved with using a public infrared sauna.
As I said before, the ideal clothing is as little as possible if that is an option for you. So you can either wear nothing and go free for all, or you could use a towel if you like or you could wear clothing as I’ve just mentioned. Again whatever you feel comfortable in.

We can look into what to wear in an infrared sauna but on the other hand, it’s just as important to mention what not to wear in an infrared sauna. So let’s take a look at that as well.
Basically, you don’t want to wear anything heavy or dark in colour. There’s nothing worse than wearing heavy clothes in a gym, it could actually cause some health issues if you’re not careful.
Also, you don’t want to wear anything that is dark in colour and the reason for this is you’ll be blocking out the light needed to get to your body to start the whole infrared sauna sweating process. The infrared light needs to be able to penetrate your body and wearing anything heavy and dark will hinder that.
And when it comes to sauna etiquette, it’s not something you would do in a public sauna anyway.

I’d like to cover a few things that would be recommended before you hop into your sauna, we talk about what to wear in an infrared sauna so it’s only fair practice to talk about what you can do to prepare for your sauna session. It’s common practice and stuff you may know but it’s good to list it here.
Should I Shower Before A Sauna?
The answer is yes, especially after working out or you have been doing something that may get you dirty. Getting into a sauna in a dirty state is not recommended. You want to make sure your skin is clean and has any impurities removed.
This will give you a better chance to get the best out of your sauna session. And if you are getting into a public infrared sauna some places require it anyway. So it’s a good practice to get into.
Remove any jewellery.
This is a good habit to get into, things will be getting hot in there and eliminating any potential issues is also a good practice to get into. These could be rings, bracelets, earrings. Also, some smartwatches can be sensitive to heat so it’s recommended that you remove any potential risks.
Remove Any Makeup, especially any face makeup.
Any makeup will hinder the infrared sauna from doing its job properly as it will clog up your pores and make it hard to sweat properly, not only that the makeup will run anyway with the heat. Plus it will make the experience really uncomfortable.
Other Infrared Sauna Tips That Can Help You Prepare
We have pretty much covered all you need to know on what to wear in an infrared sauna, but there are a few other things that are handy to know before and after your session.
Different Infrared Sauna Settings
Some infrared saunas allow you to heat with different colours as they can have different effects on your body. It’s called chromotherapy, it’s all about colour therapy and it can help with your moods. This can be very handy if it’s an option.
Not all saunas will have this feature but if they do you could look at changing things up a bit just to experiment a little. It might help with relaxation and getting yourself into a happy state. Just thought it might be worth a mention although it doesn’t really relate to what I’m covering today.
Now, this does have everything to do with this article. Preparation is the key to a better-infrared sauna experience. Make sure you drink plenty of water before you enter an infrared sauna, although this applies to any type of sauna.
And not only that, make sure you keep drinking after your session as well, as you will have lost a lot of water content while in the sauna. With anything, hydration is the key.
Having said that, also avoid drinks that might make you dehydrated, this would include alcohol, soft drinks, coffee or heavy foods that might sit in your stomach while in the sauna.
When you eat heavy types of foods and a lot of them your body needs to use more of its energy source to process the foods. While in the infrared sauna you want to have as much energy as you can.
Allow Your Body To Cool Down.
Once you get out of the sauna it’s important to allow your body to cool down a little before you get into the shower. Once you have a shower make sure it’s not too cold. It’s important to wash off any sweat and muck that you might have extracted from your body. Try to avoid using soap, this will just clog up your pores again which you’re trying to avoid. This will leave your skin feeling fresh and bright.
Try To Keep Technology In Your Bag.
I know its hard, our phones are attached to us all the time and nowadays it’s natural to keep them on ourselves at all times. In saying that, one of the reasons you are going into an infrared sauna is to relax and unwind.
This is a great reason to leave your phone in your bag. You want to limit your distractions as much as you can. Use this time to refresh and de-stress yourself. Your mind and body will thank you later. Having said that there can be reasons to take your phone in the sauna, music for relaxation or meditation would be a useful reason. Just be aware they can overheat if not monitored.
